Praised Dame Margaret Sparrow

In a special feature in the May 2011 newsletter of the Abortion Law Reform Association of New Zealand entitled "Honouring Dame Margaret Sparrow", Carol Beaumont made the following statement honouring the former abortionist and president of ALRANZ:[1]

"On behalf of the Labour Women’s Caucus I would like to convey our gratitude and admiration for the work of Margaret Sparrow as President of ALRANZ over the last 36 years. Her contribution to the cause of women’s rights in that capacity (and others) has been immense. Her work has always been in the context of the whole spectrum of sexual and reproductive health. We have seen Margaret as a determined, consistent and principled advocate for women’s right to choose to have a safe and legal abortion, and for the need to decriminalise and reform abortion law. Her manner as an advocate has been to argue in a reasoned and evidence-based way which has led to widely held respect for her.Among our Women’s Caucus are former ministers of Women’s Affairs and Health who specifically dealt with Margaret as President of ALRANZ and who acknowledge how compelling an advocate they found her to be. We are aware that there have been many who have attacked and vilified Margaret over the years but this has not in any way deterred her from promoting hers and ALRANZ’s objectives. We wish her well in her future endeavours and know that she will continue fighting for women’s rights."
