The National Abortion Federation is an organization of abortion practitioners, including individals and facilities, with over 400 members in 47 states, 8 Canadian provinces, Europe, South American, and Australia. Their member facilities, which include many Planned Parenthood affiliates, perpetrate half of all abortions in the United States. They hold annual meetings to discuss their collective needs, and Risk Management Seminars to address abortion practice and safety.[1]

NAF operates a toll-free hotline that refers prospective patients to member facilities, dismisses any anxiety about submitting to an abortion, and assures callers that members all adhere to only the highet standards and that facilities with "serious" complications or deaths are not permitted to hold NAF membership.[2]

NAF was founded in 1977, with the merger of the National Abortion Council and the National Associaion of Abortion Facilities.[3] Their members almost immediately began committng gross malpractice, starting with the June 14, 1977 death of teenage newlywed Barbaralee Davis, who was sent home from Hope Clinic for Women with the face and spine of her 16-week fetus embedded in a tear in her uterus.[4][5][6][7][8][9]

Notable Members

  • Abu Hayat: Dubbed "The Butcher of Avenue A," Hayat was responsible for the death of Sophie McCoy[11], and was sentenced to prison for ripping the arm off a 32-week fetus, who was subseqently born alive, during the performance of an illegal abortion.[12] Hayat was found guilty of gross negligence by the NewYork Medical board,[13] and after the news broke of the maiming of the infant, patients came forward to report egregious malpractice and sexual abuse.[14]
  • Alberto Hodari: This abortionist, who told Medical Students for Choice that he has a "license to lie,"[15] was responsible for the deaths of Regina Johnson, Tamiia Russell, and Chivon Williams. Tamiia Russell was a 15-year old sexual abuse victim brought for the abortion by her abuser's sister. Hodari was also accused by one woman of performing a forced abortion on her after she had changed her mind about going through with the procedure.[16]
  • Atlanta Surgi-Center: After the death of Catherine Pierce, inspectors cited Atlanta Surgi-Center for administering "the same anesthesia dosages" to patients whose weights ranges from 107 to 167 pounds, inadequate record keeping, and inadequate supervision of patients.[17]
  • Atlanta Women's Pavilion: This facility managed to fatally injure these two teens in the same hour.[18]
  • Benjamin Munson: This erstwhile criminal abortionist[19] went on to kill Yvonne Mesteth[20] and Linda Padfield[21] by performing incomplete abortions.
  • Eastern Women's Center: This facility perfomed the fatal abortions on Dawn Mack,[22], 13-year-old Dawn Ravenelle,.[23] and Venus Ortiz.[24] The New York Health Department repeatedly cited Eastern for serious violations including deficiences in staff qualifications, record keeping, and patient care.[25]
  • Family Practice Associates Medical Group: Founded in California by Edward Campbell Allred, who is credited with inventing the "assembly-line abortion," FPA has been responsible for the malpractice deaths of Deanna Bell, Chanelle Bryant, Patricia Chacon, Laniece Dorsey, Josefina Garcia, Nakia Jorden, Maria Leho, Susan Levy, Christine Mora, Kimberly Neil, Joyce Ortenzio, Mary Pena, and Tami Suematsu. Allred has admitted in a depotion that FPA has never done a prevenability study after a patient death.[26]
  • George Tiller: Tiller's Wichita, Kansas facility, where the fatal abortion was performed on mentally-disabled sex abuse victim Christin Gibert, rotinely performed illegal post-viability abortions, skirting the law by having Kristin Neuhaus generate mental health diagnoses using a computer program, and prescribing an abortion as the treatment for these illnesses.[27]
  • Hanam Rotem: After the death of Gloria Aponte at Rotem's facilities, an investigation by health officials found that Rotem had permitted a receptionist with no medical training to administer anesthesia.[28]
  • Midtown Hospital:In addition to the death of Sara Niebel[29], Midtown was caught perpetrating illegal post-viability abortions in substandard conditions.[30]
  • The Kermit Gosnell Scandal: The Grand Jury investigation into the abortion practice of Kermit Gosnell revealed that a National Abortion Federation inspector observed the dangerous, filthy conditions, but failed to report the danger to the proper authorities. In addition, National Abortion Federation member clinic Atlantic Women’s Medical Services was allowing Gosnell to begin illegal third-trimester abortions on their premises, then complete them in his Philadelphia facility.[31]
