In May 2011, Family Planning Advocates of NYS (FPANYS) hosted the DCHI Day of Action as part of The Diverse Communities Health Initiative of the The Education Fund of Family Planning Advocates of NYS. The coordinators invited lawmakers to the event, including Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins in order that the members of the Family Planning Advocates of NYS could urge the passage of legislation to give health care to 'diverse communities', including required language interpretive services for Limited English Proficiency patients, Medicaid coverage of language interpreters in all health care settings and cultural competence training for health care providers. Loretta Ross, described by the FPANYS article as a legendary women’s movement leader, was the keynote speaker at this event. The FPANYS article states: "Cultural competence in health care is an educational strategy to prepare the future health care workforce to care for New York’s increasingly diverse population."
