DCHI Day of Action

The coordinators invited lawmakers to the event, including Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins in order that the members of the Family Planning Advocates of NYS could urge the passage of legislation to give health care to 'diverse communities', including required language interpretive services for Limited English Proficiency patients, Medicaid coverage of language interpreters in all health care settings and cultural competence training for health care providers. Loretta Ross, described by the FPANYS article as a legendary women’s movement leader, was the keynote speaker at this event. The FPANYS article states: "Cultural competence in health care is an educational strategy to prepare the future health care workforce to care for New York’s increasingly diverse population." [1]

On May 19, 2008, this event was followed by the Interfaith Legislative Advocacy Day, where teams of participants were joined by experienced advocates and met with key legislators and other policy makers. The issues advocated for were: comprehensive reproductive health care, including sexuality education for teens; marriage equality for same gender couples and dignity for all students and universal health care.
